Remote Backend Software Engineer (Latin America)

About the role

Abstra, a nearshore tech talent services company, is hiring a Backend Software Engineer to build and operate backend services for its cloud-native, AI-enabled platforms. You will deliver well-scoped services and features independently, with direction from senior engineers on larger architecture and design decisions. The position is 100% remote in Latin America, with working hours overlapping U.S. business hours.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain backend services and features within a microservices architecture, from technical design through deployment.
• Build services in Java 21 / Spring Boot 3, exposing internal APIs via gRPC/Protobuf and REST where appropriate.
• Work with relational data models in PostgreSQL, including writing and reviewing schema migrations and queries.
• Contribute to event-driven features using Kafka.
• Use AWS services following established microservices and infrastructure patterns.
• Use AI coding tools to speed up development, validating and testing their output.
• Write automated tests, take part in code reviews and collaborate with US-based leadership and Spanish-speaking stakeholders.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• 3+ years of professional software development experience, including backend systems work.
• Solid fundamentals in data structures, algorithms and object-oriented design.
• English spoken and written at a professional level for daily collaboration with a US-based team.

Required skills

• Statically typed backend language (Java strongly preferred).
• Relational database (e.g. PostgreSQL) and Git-based source control (e.g. GitHub).
• Microservices architecture; command-line comfort.
• Plus: AWS deployment and operation, gRPC/Protobuf, Kafka, Infrastructure as Code (AWS CDK, Terraform), AI-powered product features, HR/marketplace SaaS experience, and prior US-based team experience.
